Dr. Walakira is an Associate Professor of Social Work at Makerere University, in the Department of Social Work and Social Administration (DSWSA), School of Social Sciences.  He holds a PhD from the University of Vienna, Austria in Social and Cultural Anthropology. His academic career is focused on orphans and vulnerable children (OVC). Among the roles he has played in this regard are: Lecturing at the University on courses that focus on social work with children and youth, child protection, social protection and research methodology. He has conducted research on topical issues concerning violence against children, child labour, de-institutionalisation and re-integration of children into home based care and youth skills training, and generally programming for children and youth.

Dr Walakira played a leading role in developing a national curriculum on child protection and has recently overseen the review of the curriculum for the Bachelor of Social Work and Master of Social Work for Makerere University. He has served as Head of SWSA Department since 2012 to the present date. He has played a leading role in developing National Action Plans aimed at improving the wellbeing of children and providing expert input in national policies concerning children’s welfare. He is a member of many international networks and serves on several boards on NGOs and other institutions serving children and youth. He has also offered advisory services to several international organisations and local NGOs in Africa working with Children and Youth particularly on themes linked to child rights, child protection, social protection, child labour, HIV and AIDS, youth empowerment, programming for children and youth, and upward policy analysis and advocacy.
