Prof. Winifred Kamau holds Bachelor of Laws (LLB) and Masters of Law (LLM) from the University of Nairobi and a PhD in Law from Osgoode Hall Law School, York University, Canada.  She is Associate Professor in the School of Law, University of Nairobi where she currently serves as Chair of Private Law Department.  She has wide experience as a Law Teacher, Researcher and Consultant and has published extensively.  In 2010, she co-authored a UNIFEM study involving comprehensive review of Kenya’s constitutional and legal framework relating to women’s rights. 

Prof. Kamau is a Founder and Member of the Advisory Committee of Equality Effect, a collaborative initiative to advance the human rights of women and girls in Africa through research, litigation and other strategic actions.  The ‘160 Girls Project’, is an initiative of Equality Effect that aims to achieve justice and protect girls from sexual violence.  In 2012, Equality Effect sponsored a ground breaking constitutional case which resulted in orders against the Kenyan State to enforce existing laws protecting girls from sexual violence.  Equality Effect is now engaged in efforts to implement the ruling, including police training and public legal education.
