Usang Maria Assim is a Senior Researcher in the Children’s Rights Project at the Dullah Omar Institute for Constitutional Law, Governance and Human Rights, Faculty of Law, University of the Western Cape in South Africa. She also teaches a number of law modules at both undergraduate and post-graduate levels, including Constitutional Law, Children’s Right and the Law and International Family Law. Assim has written and published on aspects of human and children’s rights, including the right to alternative care, children’s civil rights and freedoms, and children’s socio-economic rights. Her book, Understanding kinship care of children in Africa was published in 2015 by Eleven International Publishing in the Netherlands.

Assim works in close collaboration with the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child, its partners and civil society organisations involved with children’s rights in Africa and globally. She is an Advisory Board member of the United Nations Global Study on Children Deprived of Liberty. Assim holds an LLD from the University of the Western Cape, an LLM from the University of Pretoria and an LLB from the Obafemi Awolowo University in Nigeria. She is also a member of the Nigerian Bar.
